Prayer Flags

Prayer flags are omnipresent in the Himalayas: They are to be found in mountain passes, at mountain tops, in monasteries and in dwelling houses. They mostly consist of 25 single pendants linked by a string. Five flags in the colours blue, red, green and yellow form a group. The colours stand for the five elements: blue - air, white - aether, red - fire, green - water, yellow - earth. On the flags Mantras (prayer formulae) are printed; central element of the prayer flags is mostly the wind horse (Tibetan: Lungta). By the fluttering in the wind, the Mantras should spread in the world. After Tibetan belief, hanging up, as well as looking at a prayer flag brings blessing and happiness.
